Thanks to Gregg Hillmar, his candour, and methodology, we now have a decent manual for the creation and editing of theatrical light plots using Vectorworks Spotlight with the release of “The Light Plot Deconstructed.” Some of the most useful advice comes from Gregg’s continual comparisons of traditional hand drafting to the step by step methods used in Spotlight. As someone who also teaches CAD drafting to “the new generation” unfamiliar with traditional drafting, I can really value his thought process applied. But it is also within this same reference that I have suggestions for Gregg and Vectorworks. This manual relies a bit too much on a users previous knowledge of the program itself. And sadly the practice of hand drafting will eventually be an “ancient history.” In Gregg’s defense he does provide a disclaimer up front about the assumption of previous familiarity with Vectorworks basics. My criticism stems from the possible point of view of someone very new to the program and the intricacies of drafting itself. Vectorworks Spotlight (and all of the other software editions) is an extremely powerful program with a considerably large learning curve to tackle. Once this initial curve is accomplished it truly can unleash tremendous possibility. (Its obvious I’m a true believer) However, I would prefer to see a more detailed, possibly bulleted, listing of steps accompanied by more and better graphic illustrations. The graphics ( I have a first edition) are too small in a number of places to understand detail accompanying the text. I’m not so sure the six by nine inch format helps either.
My suggestions imply that future editions be larger in size, have more detailed graphics, and slightly simpler reference content access. But I am one who would eagerly await and welcome these editions with a willingness to pay more for a larger volume. Gregg’s work here is a very welcome edition to those that are new, as well as those, like myself, who have been using the program but can benefit from his vast knowledge of the program.

Inside Vectorworks 2010 : «Inside Vectorworks», Ausgabe 2010, ist die fünfte vollständig überarbeitete Auflage des traditionellen Lehrbuchs aus dem Verlag «CadForum Architektur». Das Buch enthält in der Praxis tatsächlich realisierte Beispiele für die Bereiche Architektur, Landschaftsarchi-tektur und Innenausbau. Alle Beispiele und der übrige Inhalt wurden auf den neuesten Stand der Dinge sprich Programmversion 2010 gebracht. Ziel und Absicht bestehen in einer ganzheitlichen, praxisorientierten Betrachtung von CAD-Aufgaben. Es geht weniger um die Erläuterung computerspezifischer Instrumente, als um das Verständnis der Arbeitsphilosophie und der damit verbundenen Denk- und Arbeitsweise.
